We are all exposed to some form of manual handling, including lifting, carrying, pulling, and pushing actions, often compounded by simultaneous movements such as climbing or pivoting. Personal injuries resulting from incorrect manual handling in the workplace account for over a million working days lost per year, along with the pain and suffering experienced by those affected. Understanding and applying correct manual handling techniques can make a significant difference, much like the advantages gained from CPR training in emergency situations.

The risks associated with manual handling have been recognized by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for many years, as reflected in their regulations and advisory initiatives promoting good health and safety practices.

The regulations mandate that employers provide their employees with health and safety training, which should include specific information on manual handling injury risks and prevention strategies.

Duration

This is a 6-hour classroom-based manual handling course. Depending on the learner's prior experience, there may be some pre-course or post-course reading materials to enhance understanding.

Syllabus

This manual handling course covers a range of subjects designed to equip delegates to:

- Understand the reasons for safe manual handling

- Grasp how manual handling risk assessments contribute to health and safety improvements

- Learn about the principles, types of equipment, and testing requirements related to manual handling safety

- Apply safe manual handling principles effectively

Certification

Practical assessment is ongoing by the instructor and culminates with a written test. This qualification does not expire; however, refresher training, which aligns with health and safety training updates, is essential to maintain the currency of the qualification.

Numbers

A maximum of 16 students are permitted in each class, with a minimum age requirement of 14 years. A certificate can be awarded to all participants, subject to successful assessment.
